Kindergarten Information

The Ed Smith PTO has put together this list of frequently asked questions about kindergarten at Ed Smith.

How big are the kindergarten classes?

Usually around 20 children. Each classroom has both a main teacher and an assistant, and the inclusive classroom has additional help as well.

How will I know what’s going on in my child’s class?

Each week, kindergarten teachers send home a newsletter with information about what students are learning that week, what days kids have specials, and any special events.

How do I communicate with the teachers?

The Syracuse City School District uses an app called TalkingPoints. The school sends out announcements about events, and you can also use it to communicate directly with your child’s teacher.

Is there an after-school program?

Yes! There is a free after-school program at Ed Smith Monday-Thursday (you can see the 2024-2025 schedule here), as well as before-school care. Kids are separated by grade. There is also a bus that runs from Ed Smith to the JCC for children interested in their after-school program.

Are there ways to help out in the classroom?

Yes! Kindergarteners go on lots of field trips (the pumpkin patch, the zoo, the library, the fire station) and parent volunteers are welcome. In addition, the Ed Smith PTO sends out frequent emails with volunteer opportunities.

What’s the bus situation?

District busing is provided if your child resides more than one mile away from the school. During the first few weeks, teachers make sure that kindergarteners get off the bus and to their classroom, and then back on the bus after school.

What’s recess like?

Ed Smith got a new playground in fall of 2023! There’s a play structure, plenty of room to run around, and it’s shaded by trees. Kids are separated by grade for recess.

How do I talk to current Ed Smith parents to hear about their experience?

The PTO would be happy to put you in touch with current parents of kindergarteners to talk about their experience. Just email us at edsmithpto@gmail.com
